Euro crisis talk: Professor Clemens Fuest

On the anniversary of the end of World War II, the Oxford German Society is hosting a talk by Professor Clemens Fuest about one of the biggest challenges facing Europe since 1945 – the ongoing Euro zone debt crisis.

Professor Clemens Fuest is a distinguished Professor at the Said Business School and is Research Director of the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation. He has served as advisor for the German Ministry of Finance and will return to Germany next year to become president of the leading economic research institute ZEW in Mannheim.

BCG Talk: A $4.2 trillion opportunity

German Society Football Team

The German Society is looking for members interested joining a society football team just in time for the Euro 2012! We have been challenged by the Polish Society, and are looking for other nations to play against, with the hope of having a small football tournament by the end of term. McKinsey Technology Lab Prague

Our sponsor McKinsey invites all German-speaking students to a 3 day technology-workshop from July 5th to 8th 2012 in Prague. State election party

State elections in the largest German state of North Rhine-Westphalia are taking place next Sunday. If you would like to watch the election live coverage in the company of like-minded students in a relaxed atmosphere, then please join us on Sunday 13th May, 4.30pm at the Butler Room in Nuffield. All party affiliations welcome!

German Language classes

German Language classes are taking place as usual. Marco Brandl will continue to teach the Beginner’s course, while we are happy to have recruited Ines Gassal for teaching the intermediate course.

The Beginner’s course takes place each Monday at 5pm in the Oriental Institute, Pusey Lane, in Room 301. The Intermediate course will take place each Wednesday at 5pm at the same venue. The course is free for members, so feel free to come along! Contact: language@oxford-germansoc.co.uk

Arts Exhibition Vernissage: Daniel Eltinger

Please join us at the opening of the exhibition “Vigilia: Inversive Art” about up-and-coming German artist Daniel Eltinger on Wed, May 2nd, 5.30pm in the Said Business School Gallery.

There will be an introductory talk by Professor George Pattison (Christ Church), two short documentary films about Daniel Eltinger and his painting technique by Valentina Boye Cifuentes and Benjamin Kahlmeyer, and a performance by Alexander Lutz (dance) and James Donaldson (cello). Meet the artist and and enjoy a glass of wine or juice. All welcome!

Cambridge and London German Societies @ Oxford

On Sat, May 5th, the German Socities of Cambridge and London will be coming to us for a visit. We will start the afternoon at 3.30pm at Balliol College Porters Lodge with a guided tour through the City of Oxford. If you did not yet to get to know about the history behind the City of dreaming spires, this is your chance. Afterwards, we will head to the river for some punting fun and then go to St John’s College Informal hall to fill our empty stomachs. We will end the day in Oxford at one of the numerous pubs.

Talk: Prof. Dr. Gesine Schwan

We are proud to announce that Prof. Dr. Gesine Schwan, president of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Government, will join us on Thursday, 26th April at 8pm in Christchurch College, Blue Boar Theatre for a talk on the future of democracy in Europe. See our Facebook event here.

Following a successful academic career in political science, she was nominated by the SPD to face Horst Köhler in the federal presidential elections in both 2004 and 2009. Schwan has widely published in political theory and philosophy, especially theories of democracy and has been awarded, among others, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic Germany and the French Legion of Honour (Grand Officer).

The event will be in German, and it is free for members, 3£ for non-members.
